The schools: "Gymnasien"
"Gymnasien" for International Students
We place international students at Gymnasien, Germany’s academically oriented secondary schools that prepare students for university. The curriculum is challenging and includes:
- Two foreign languages
- Mathematics and science courses
- Other academic subjects designed to develop critical thinking and study skills
About 30% of German students attend a Gymnasium. Learn more about Gymnasien and the German school system.
Abitur – University Entrance Qualification
The Abitur is the final examination at a Gymnasium and serves as a university entrance qualification. While it allows access to higher education, options are competitive:
- Only students with excellent Abitur results can freely choose their university and field of study.
- Important for exchange students: Those planning to complete the Abitur must attend a private or boarding school in Germany, as the Abitur is not available at public schools for exchange students.

Two of the high schools, we work with in Berlin: Heinrich Schliemann Gymnasium (Google map) and Gabriele von Bülow Gymnasium (map).

The School Year in Germany
The German school year begins in August or September, with holidays varying by state:
- Summer break: ~6 weeks
- Autumn break: ~2 weeks
- Christmas break: ~2 weeks
- Easter break: ~2 weeks
School runs Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 or 2 p.m., leaving time for afternoon and weekend activities. Students often join local clubs to explore sports like soccer, basketball, swimming, or martial arts, participate in arts and music such as choir, orchestra, theater, or painting, and get involved in community activities including youth councils, volunteer groups, or hobby clubs.
School Examples
You can choose the city where you’d like to study (e.g. Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg), but selecting a specific school is not possible. To give you an idea of what German Gymnasien look like, here are the websites of some schools we cooperate with in Berlin:
Host families in Germany
How GLS Finds Host Families
At GLS Berlin, we carefully select and screen every host family to make sure students feel safe, welcome, and at home in Germany. Our process includes:
- Personal interviews: Families are personally interviewed by GLS staff to learn about their lifestyle, values, and motivation to host.
- Home visits: We inspect the house or apartment to ensure it meets our standards for comfort and safety.
- Ongoing support: Host families receive guidance from GLS and can reach out at any time. Students also have a GLS contact person throughout their stay.
- Cultural exchange focus: Many host families have children who join exchange programs themselves, so they understand the importance of intercultural learning.
This way, you can be sure that your host family in Germany will not only provide room and board but also give you an authentic cultural experience and a warm welcome into everyday German life.
Families live close to your school and provide a single room with full board. More about host families in the FAQ section.
How You Live with a Host Family
Most students will have their own private room. In rare cases, and only after consultation, you may share a room with a host sibling or another exchange student. Common areas such as the living room, kitchen, and bathroom are shared with the family.
Your host family in provides full board:
- Monday to Friday: breakfast, packed lunch, and evening meal
- Saturday and Sunday: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Meals are prepared by the host family just as they would cook for themselves, giving you an authentic taste of daily German life.
