University Placement in Germany: FAQ

university placement in Germany

Ask Sarah

Sarah is the expert for university placement services @ GLS. Should you have a question, just email her:

How many aspiring university students do you consult per year?

I´d say about 100 every year. We offer TestDaf courses 6 times per year, and many of those who do the TestDaF courses also use our university placement services. But that is no necessary combination, some do only the TestDaf course with GLS.

Do you guarantee a placement at a university?

Yes, we do - as long as a student fulfills two conditions: a) he/she passes TestDaf or any other German language certificate their prospective university wants and b) he/she has the academic qualification, documented either by an accepted high school diploma or studies at a university in their home country.

Can I select a university in Germany?

Yes you can. In order to apply for a student applicant visa, a conditional acceptance by a German university is needed. This university will be one that GLS selects. But after your arrival in Germany you are free to apply at any university in Germany that you choose, and GLS will support and consult you as you go along.

Do you offer regular consultation-hours?

Yes, there are fixed "Sprechstunden" at the GLS office, and we are happy to arrange individual meetings any time you need them.

Do I have to do "Studienkolleg" before going to university?

That depends - no, if you already did university studies in your home country and/or if your high school diploma is accepted as equivalent to the German "Abitur". But don´t worry, we´ll check your documents for free and let you know if you would have to do "Studienkolleg" or not. Generally it looks like this: 70% of those we support do Studienkolleg, 30% don´t need that, i.e. are on an academic level that allows them to apply directly at a university.
